Sowing Calendar: What to Sow and Plant When
Knowing the right time for sowing and planting is half the battle in the vegetable garden.
February/March – Pre-cultivation begins
Peppers and chili need the longest lead time → sow on the windowsill from early February.
In March follow: tomatoes, celery, leeks, lettuce for the early harvest.
These plants cannot tolerate frost and only go outdoors after the Ice Saints (May 12–15).
March/April – Cold-tolerant direct sowing
From mid-March, sow directly outdoors as soon as the soil is workable:
- Carrots, spinach, radishes
- Peas and lamb's lettuce
- Parsley and dill
May – Main planting
From late April / early May (soil temperature above 10 °C):
- Sow beans and zucchini directly
- Plant or sow cucumbers and squash
- Plant out pre-grown tomatoes, peppers and basil after the Ice Saints
July/August – Second season
Now sow for autumn and winter:
- Plant kale (Brussels sprouts are planted back in May/June – they need the long growing season)
- Sow Asian salads, winter purslane, lamb's lettuce directly
- Plant garlic from October for next year
