Growing Cucumbers: Crisp & Fresh from Your Own Bed
Cucumbers – refreshment providers in midsummer
Once you've eaten homegrown cucumbers, you'll never want to go without them again. Their fresh flavor is hardly comparable to store-bought produce.
Variety overview
- Slicing cucumbers: long, mild, the classic for salads
- Pickling cucumbers (gherkins): short, firm-fleshed, ideal for pickling
- Mini cucumbers: ideal for kids and small gardens
- Snack cucumbers: short, thin-skinned, without bitterness
Propagation & planting
Pre-grow from April in pots (25–28 °C), individually, since cucumber roots are sensitive.
Plant out from mid-May (after the Ice Saints) in a warm, wind-sheltered spot.
- Spacing: 50–60 cm between plants
- Climbing trellis: cucumbers can climb up to 2 m – set up support from the start
- In the greenhouse: cucumbers love warmth and grow faster and stronger there
Care
- Water generously: cucumbers are 95% water – keep evenly moist!
- No cold water – always use water that has stood or been warmed.
- Mulch: straw or bark mulch retains moisture and prevents splashback.
- Pinch out side shoots: for slicing cucumbers, train the main stem upward and pinch side shoots after 2 leaves.
- Fertilize: every 2 weeks, focused on nitrogen and potassium.
Harvest
Check daily – cucumbers grow incredibly fast! Overripe cucumbers slow down new fruit formation.
- Harvest slicing cucumbers at 25–35 cm
- Harvest pickling cucumbers at 6–10 cm
Common problems
| Problem | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Bitter fruit | Drought stress | Water more evenly |
| Yellow leaves | Nutrient deficiency or waterlogging | Fertilize or improve drainage |
| Powdery mildew | Humid air | Ventilate, remove affected leaves |
